A day in the rain

Heel trouw ga ik elk jaar naar de Utrechtse Fabriek in het Griftpark in Utrecht, dus ook vandaag. In de regen. Oh, wat voelde ik me rot namens al die mensen bij de kraampjes. Die hadden natuurlijk ook niet verwacht dat het eind mei maar twaalf graden (juist, twáálf graden!) zou zijn. Brr. Dus: winterjas aan en op de fiets.

Every year I go to the creative market in a park near me, Utrechtse Fabriek. Every year I go, so I also went today. In the rain. I felt so bad for all those people there selling their goods. 'Cause there's no way they ever could've thought it would be only twelve degrees (yes, twélve degrees!) at the end of May. So: I put on my winter coat and got on my bike.

Een van mijn favoriete kraampjes, elk jaar weer, is die van 'Buiten de lijntjes' met hun vrolijke en gezellige papierwaren. Die theedoeken die je later tot knuffelbeesten kunt naaien, vind ik al jaren heel erg leuk. Maar toch heb ik er nog nooit één gekocht. Misschien dat mijn dier er gewoon nog niet tussen zit.

One of my favorite stalls, every year, is that of 'Buiten de lijntjes' with all the happy and nice looking stationairy. I just adore the tea towels that you can sew into softies after you're done with them. I've never bought one though, I guess I am waiting for the right animal turned into a tea towel. 

 

Ondank de regen hoorde ik dat het gisteren superdruk was geweest op de markt, gelukkig maar. Elk jaar koop ik ook eigenlijk wel wat. Maar dit jaar kwam ik met lege handen thuis. Vooral omdat ik mezelf al verwende met een weekendje weg. Maar ik heb er wel een beetje spijt van, want bij het idee van een 'doe het zelf teckel' moet ik zo hard lachen, dat ik had er zo een toch wel mee had willen nemen. En ik ben natuurlijk ook vergeten hoe de webwinkel heet die het verkoopt. Mopper...

Despite the rain, I overheard that it was actually quite busy yesterday. That's a good thing. Every year I end up busing something at the market, but today I came home empty handed. Mostly because I had already treated myself to a weekend away. And I already regret it. 'Cause the whole idea of a DIY Doggie kit makes me laugh! I really should have bought one. But yeah, coulda woulda shoulda... and now I forgot the name of the shop that sells them. Grump...

My birthday in Zutphen

31 is zo´n ontzettend niksige leeftijd. Niet dat ik 30 nu vond om over naar huis te schrijven, maar 31... ik kan niet zeggen dat ik wat met die leeftijd heb. Vandaar dat ik ook geen enkele neiging had om thuis te blijven voor mijn verjaardag en het uitbundig te vieren. Als het aan mij had gelegen, was ik in het vliegtuig naar een warme bestemming gestapt. Maar aangezien de portemonnee dat niet toeliet, werd het iets minder tropisch, maar wel leuk: Zutphen.

Becoming 31 years old. It means nothing to me I have to say, not that I was such a big fan of becoming 30 either. But 31, is so... nithing, I don't know. That's why I had no desire to stay home and celebrate. If my bank acount would\ve allowed it, I would've flown off somewhere warm and sunny. But since my bank account wouldn't let me, I decided to go somewhere less tropical, but still fun. Zutphen, in the east of The Netherlands.

Vorig jaar was ik al eens in Zutphen, voor mijn werk. En ik moet zeggen dat ik toen erg gecharmeerd was van het stadje, vooral omdat het in zo'n rustige omgeving ligt. Het is groen, groener, groenst. Stiekem hebben mijn lief en ik dan ook voor menig makelaarskantoor gestaan.

Last year I was in Zutphen, for work. And I really liked this charming little town. Especially because it's situated in such a green environment. It's green, greener, greenest. So secretly, me and the husbear also stood in the window of some real estate agents checking out some houses.

Maar uiteindelijk vierden we mijn verjaardag in stijl. Ik snuffelde rond op de markt, kocht een paar mooie flessen wijn bij een fantastische wijnhandel, begroef mijn neus in een streekroman, zat urenlang met mijn lief te kletsen in de gezellige stadsbrouwerij, kreeg het verkeerde hoofdgerecht voorgeschoteld (maar kwam daar pas achter toen ik het bijna op had) en bleven veel te lang in de kroeg hangen om de puntentelling van het Eurovisie songfestival te zien. Ik mag dan 31 geworden zijn, zaterdag was ik weer gewoon even 25.

But we ended up celerating my birthday in style anyway. I browsed the local market, bought some lovely bottles in a great wine shop, put one of the local novels in my purse, sat at the local brewery for hours chatting with the husbear, got the wrong main course at the restaurant we went to (but didn't find out about it until I almost finished it) and stayed in the pub for way too long 'cause we were watching the (oh horror) Eurovision song contest. Okay, I may have turned 31 last weekend, but it felt like being 25 allover again.

Always on vacation at 'Immer Urlaub'

Leuke nieuwe creatieve initiatieven moedig ik altijd aan, zeker als die worden opgezet in mijn eigen stad. Vandaar vond ik het zo leuk dat Ellen me uitnodigde voor de opening van haar nieuwe winkel/studio 'Urlaub' aan het nieuwe stadsstrandje van Utrecht.

I always applaud new creative initiatives, especially in my own city. So I was very happy that Ellen invited me to the opening of her new shop and studio 'Urlaub' near the enw city beach in Utrecht.

In haar winkel (zelf noemt ze het een conceptstore, maar ik weet nooit zo goed wat ik met zo'n term aan moet, want een 'concept' is in mijn ogen niet af, en dat zijn de mooie dingen bij Immer Urlaub zeker wel), verkoopt Ellen haar eigen illustraties en ontwerpen, maar ook die van andere designers. Een soort snoepwinkel voor iedereen die van (betaalbaar) design houdt.

In her shop (Ellen calls this her concept store, but I am not too sure what that means. As in my mind a concept isn't quite finished and the items in Ellens store definately are) you can buy Ellens own illustrations and designs, but she also sells designs by others. It's a candy store for people that love (affordable) design.

Mijn favoriet waren de hangers va 'De Grote Beer', echt geweldig bedacht en zo mooi gemaakt. Heel kwetsbaar om een stukje heelal rond je hals te hebben. Maar zoals je kunt zien, kiezen was moeilijk!

My favorites were the necklaces with 'The Big Dipper', so beautiful and well thought through. Wouldn't it be amazing and precious to have a piece of the universe around your neck? But as you can see, chosing was hard.

Als je in Utrecht bent, loop vooral even langs Urlaub (en ernaast zit een leuk café, Klein Berlijn). Het is naast Tivoli de Helling.

WIP Wednesday

Tsja, wat ligt jullie daar nou aan te kijken hè? Ik kan daar nog niet al te veel over zeggen. En of het gaat lukken, weet ik nog veel minder. Maar de kleurtjes vind ik in ieder geval top. En wie tips heeft over het netjes aan elkaar naaien van amigurumi, graag...

Well well, what's staring at you over there? Nut much I can say about that, nor can I say if this will turn out to be a great project. But I do like the colours. And if you could spare any advice on how to sew amigurumi together neatly, yes please...

En soms krijg ik uitnodigingen waar ik zo graag 'ja' op zou zeggen. Ware het niet dat het evenement plaatsvindt in Tasmanië, Australië. Beetje ver. Nu heb ik op de betreffende datum best een afspraak waar ik onderuit kan, maar ja... dat vliegticket hè. Iemand een idee hoe ik snel aan een goedkoop ticket naar Tasmanië kan komen?

And sometimes I get advitations that I just want to say 'yes' to. If it wasn't for the place where the event is taking place: Tasmania, Australia. Bit far. Now I could clear my agenda to go to this event,  no problem. But finding a plave ticket I could afford. Now, that's the thing. Anyone know where I can find a lowcost plane ticket to Tasmania?

Oh, wat zou ik graag gaan! Een beetje beppen, theedrinken, haken en kangaroes kijken...

Oh, how I wish I could go. Having a chat, a cuppa tea, some crochet, all whilst watching kangaroos...

Cherries for the birthday girl

Op zaterdag de stad in, dat is in Utrecht nooit een goed idee. Veel te druk. En zeker gisteren, zo vlak voor moederdag. Het leek wel of  de hele provincie op zoek was naar een last-minute cadeautje. En zo ook ik. Maar dan voor een vriendin die vandaag haar verjaardag vierde. Maar nadat ik in diverse winkels meterslange rijen voor de kassa spotte en ik niets origineels kon vinden, spoedde ik me weer naar huis en besloot achter de naaimachine te kruipen.

Going into town in Utrecht on a Saturdat, that's never a good plan. Far too busy for my taste. And especially yesterday, just before mothersday. It was like the entire province was looking for a last-minute gift. And so was I, but I was browsing for a friend. But after I spotted meters and meters of queues in a couple of stores, I just couldn't be bothered anymore and went home to get behind the sewing machine.

Want terwijl ik door de stad sjouwde, schoot me dit stofje te binnen. Dat lag al maanden in de kast te schreeuwen om een bestemming. En volgens mij echt perfect voor wat ik in gedachte had: een cirkelsjaal.

'Cause while I was dragging myself through town, I remembered I had this fabric just laying in my closet screaming to be used. And I thought it would be perfect for what I had in mind: an infinity scarf.

Een cirkelsjaal maken is echt een fijn werkje. Met héél weinig moeite kun je in een handomdraai een erg professioneel uitziende sjaal maken. Het moeilijkste van geheel is het netjes stikken van de zomen. Maar dit stof je liet zich heel gemakkelijk omzomen, dus daar was ik ook zo uit. Jullie zagen al eerder een cirkelsjaal van mij, een flamingo exemplaar.

Making an infinity scarf is such a nice project to work on. 'Cause without a lot of trouble you can make a very prof looking scarf. The hardest part is making neat seams. But this fabric was very easy to stitch seams in, so that was a lucky coincidence too. You've seen me making an infinity scarf before, with flamingos on it.

Mijn vriendin houdt echt van knalkleuren: roze, rood, blauw en groen. Helemaal goed! Maar ja, dit is nou niet echt een knalkleur-stof, dus besloot ik de zomen met roze te stikken. Om het toch wat pittiger te maken. Volgens mij is dat wel goed gelukt. En het geeft een leuk effect als de sjaal omwikkelt. De stof kocht ik trouwens op de Utrechtse stoffenmarkt, bij de couponnenmeneer.

My friend likes bright colors like pink, red, blue and red. Love that! But I guess this fabric isn't really bright, so that's why I decided to stitch the seams with bright pink thread, to give the whole scarf a little boost. I think that worked quite well. And it looks nice, once you wrap the scarf around. I bouhgt this fabric at the Utrecht fabric market, with the man that sells leftover fashion fabric.
