2011 wrap up

Het is bijna gedaan, 2011. Nog een paar uur aftellen en dan begint het nieuwe jaar. Ik kan niet wachten en ben altijd vreselijk benieuwd naar wat zo'n nieuw jaar gaat brengen. Maar natuurlijk ben ik nog wel zo sentimenteel dat ik 2011 goed wil uitzwaaien.

It's almost over and done, 2011. Just a few more hours of count down and then it's the start of a new year. I always look forward to a new year and I'm always very curious to what it will bring. But of course I have to get sentimental first and say a proper goodbye to 2011.

Er is zo veel gebeurd in 2011! Ik ben deze blog gestart (ja, toch best belangrijk!), want ik wilde leren haken en naaien. Wat vaker iets dragen en cadeau geven wat zelf gemaakt is, in plaats van 'zo maar' alles in de winkel kopen. Ik zag zo veel leuke blogs met lieve (en grappige, vele van jullie zijn hilarisch) mensen, goede ideeën en prachtige creaties. Ik hoop dat mijn blogje iets kan bijdragen.

So much has happened in 2011. I started this blog (hey, kinda important!), 'cause I wanted to learn how to crochet and sew. So I could wear and give away handmade things instead of always buying things from a store. I saw so many great blogs from sweet (and funny, you guys are often hilarious) people, great ideas and gorgious creations. I hope my blittle blog will add something.

Ik leerde haken, gewoon met een biebboek, filmpjes op YouTube en één bol donkerblauwe wol en haaknaald 5. Inmddels zijn er héél wat bollen wol en katoen en haaknaalden bijgekomen!

I taught myself to crochet with the help of a book from the library, some movies on YouTube and one ball of navy blue wool and hook 5 mm. The crochet bug has definately bitten me and trust me, there's a lage number of yarn balls and crochet hooks now living with me.

Ik heb zelfs een aantal dekens gehaakt. Dat had ik dus echt nooit verwacht! Maar ik ben er wel blij mee. En ik prutste net zo lang, totdat ik wat haakpatronen met jullie kon delen.

I even got to finish some blankets! If you had told me that at the beginning of this year I wouldn't have believed you. But I did, several! Can you imagine. I am so happy with the results. I also crocheted so much that I was able to make some patterns to share with you.

Ik ging ook op naailes en kocht mijn eerste naaimachine. In het begin had ik vaak ruzie met mijn masjien (waarom heb ik toch steeds lussen aan de onderkant? Waarom loopt mijn draad steeds vast?), maar inmiddels zijn mijn Toyota en ik dikke vrienden en hebben we al best wat mooie dingen tot stand gebracht. Favoriet bij mij zijn tassen. Dat weten jullie inmiddels!

I also took sewing lessons and bought my first sewing machine! The machine and me didn't always get along in the beginning (why are there all these loops? Why does it keep eating my thread?) but we've gotten to know each other and I think me and my sewing machine have made some great stuff this year. For starters (as you know, my favorite...): bags, lots of bags.

Maar ik heb natuurlijk ook andere dingen genaaid. Het is gewoon te leuk om te doen.

But of course I've sewn other stuff too, it's just so nice to create all this stuff!

Maar ook op andere gebieden ging het erg goed! Ik houd ontzettend van reizen en heb dit jaar een aantal erg mooie landen mogen bezoeken: Kroatië en Turkije. Daarnaast ging ik voor mijn werk naar Brussel (zo gaaf) en maakte ik een reis naar Rome... dat was mijn huwelijksreis!

I was also fortunate enough to travel this year. I love to travel and I was so lucky to visit some amazing countries: Croatia and Turkey. I visited Brussels for work (totally awesome) and I made a trip to Rome... that was my honeymoon!

Ja! Een huwelijksreis! Want dit jaar vroeg mijn lief me ten huwelijk en zijn we getrouwd! In september. We hebben dit héél stiekem en klein aangepakt en ik vond het een heerlijke dag!

Yes, a honeymoon! My love proposed to me and we got married this year. In September. We had a really small wedding that not many people knew about. And I loved every second of it.

En mijn trouwjurk? Die kocht ik via Etsy! Lang leve creatieve mensen die ik via deze blog heb 'leren kennen'!

And my weddingdress? I bought that on Etsy! I just love all the fantastic, creative people I've 'met' because of this blog.

Nou, sentimenteel of sentimenteel (Kleenex moment!)? Rest mij nog één ding te zeggen: wat vind ik het leuk dat jullie mijn blog komen bezoeken en berichten achter laten, telkens weer. Fantastisch. Ik geniet er met volle teugen van. Ik blijf jullie (en alles wat jullie maken) trouw volgen in 2012.

Sentimental? Moi? (Should I pass around some Kleenex?). I just have one more thing to say: I just love that you guys keep visiting my blogs and leaving those sweet comments. It's fantastic. Thank you so much. I will continue to read your blogs and watch all your wonderful creations in 2012.

Recept: pompoensoep (comford food!)

Buiten is het een beetje grijs, nat en nou ja, gewoon naar en vervelend. Stiekem voel ik me een beetje snuffelig en snotterig, maar natuurlijk niet genoeg om mezelf ziek te melden. Dan kun je je af en toe zo zie-hie-hie-hie-lug voelen. Ken je dat?

Er is een oplossing, namelijk: comford food! En nee, niet per se chocolade (al is dat natuurlijk optioneel). Maar soep. Pompoensoep. Dat vind ik het ultieme troostvoer. Geen kant-en-klare troep, maar simpele, eerlijke, zelfgemaakte pompoensoep. Geloof me: daar voel je je direct beter van.

En daarom: mijn recept!

Outside it’s grey and a bit rainy. Blegh. I’m feeling a little under the weather, but not quite sick enough to call in sick from work. You know what I mean, right? Feeling so-ho-ho sorry for myself (silly me).

There is a solution though: comfort food. And no, that doesn’t mean stuffing your face with chocolate (but that’s absolutely optional). But soup. Pumpkin soup, to be more specific. Not the soup you buy in a can. No, simple, honest, home made pumpkin soup. That’s your ultimate, feel better medication. Trust me.

Wat heb je nodig?
1 pompoen (gewoon van Albert Heijn of de biologische winkel), dit is goed voor ongeveer 800 gram pompoenblokjes).
800 ml kippenbouillon
1 ui
2 teentjes knoflook
Zout
Peper
Gemalen koriander
Kookroom

What do you need?
1 small pumpkin/squash (after it’s been cleaned you should have about 800 grams of pumpkin)
800 ml chicken stock
1 onion
2 cloves of garlic
Salt
Peper
Katumbar (coriander powder)
Cooking cream/ crème fraîche

Messen, pollepels en schorten in de aanslag! Aan de kook!

Maak allereerst de pompoen schoon. Dit is meteen de lastigste klus, want pompoenen zijn taaie sjaken! Hak met een flink mes de pompoen in vieren, haal de vieze draderige (ja, klinkt smakelijk hè) binnenkant eruit en snijdt daarna het vruchtvlees los van de schil en in blokjes. Snipper de ui en knoflook.

Doe een flinke klont boter in je soeppan en wacht to de grote bellen zijn verdwenen. Voeg de ui en knoflook toe en laat ze 3 minuten op een zacht vuurtje glazig worden. Doe er daarna de pompoenblokjes, zout, peper en 1 theelepel gemalen koriander bij. Roer dit geheel een minuut of 4 goed om.

Schenk de bouillon erbij en breng de soep aan de kook. Laat het geheel een kwartier tot 20 minuten zachtjes doorkoken. Pureer vervolgens de soep met een staafmixer of in de keukenmachine tot het helemaal glad is. Scheutje kookroom erbij en… lepelen maar.

Je voelt je meteen beter toch?

Got you knives? Your spoons and ladles? Wearing a pretty apron? Yes? Then cook!

You start by cleaning the pumpkin. Admittedly, this is the toughest part. Gosh, these pumpkins are tough Berts aren’t they? Use a huge knife to cute it in fours, then remove the gross insides and cut the nice orange flesh of the pumpkin into dices of about 2-4 cm. Dice the onion and garlic too.

Put butter into your soup pan and wait until the big bubbles have vanished. Add the onion and garlic and stirfry on a low fire until they’re nice and glazy. Add the pumpkin dices, some pepper, salt and a teaspoon of katumbar to this. Stirfry this all on a medium high fire for about 4 minutes.

Now add the chicken stock and bring the soup to a boil. Keep it simmering on a low fire for 15-20 minutes. Take the soup of the stove and blend the soup smooth in your blender or kitchen aid. Put the pan back on a very low fire, add some cream, one more stir and voilà! You’re comfort soup is done. So put some in a bowl and eat it whilst it fresh and steaming!

You felt better right away, didn’t you?

A time of giving

Het is een héle rustige kerst in huize In Red. Precies wat ik nodig had, je hoort me niet klagen. Uitslapen, uitgebreid ontbijten, een flink stuk wandelen en een beetje haken en lezen op de bank (al luisterend naar de Serious Request Top 1000). Gisteren gingen we 's middags nog even langs mijn schoonmoeder. Die vraag nooit iets voor zichzelf, maar doet heel veel voor anderen. Dan kun je niet met lege handen aankomen!

Christmas is very quiet here in the Happy in Red Residence. This was exactly what I needed, so no complaints here! I slept in late, had a great breakkie, went for a walk and spent the afternoon chrocheting and reading whilst listening to the radio. In the afternoon we also visited my mum-in-law. She never asks for anything herself, but gives a lot to others. So we were not going to show up empty handed!

Ik maakte nog even snel een cadeaumandje dat ik vulde met lekkere dingen van de biologische winkels (thee, chocolade en truffels).

I whipped up this little gift basket and filled it with goodies from the eco-shop (chocolate, tea and chocolate truffels). 

En omdat ze zo houdt van 'zelfgemaakt' (moet je vooral tegen mij zeggen!): ook nog rozijnen muffins en chocolate chip cookies. Natuurlijk voorgeproefd én goedgekeurd.

And because she loves 'home made', I made a batch of raisin muffins and chocolate chip cookies (like you have to tell me twice...). Of course all pre-tasted and approved.

Christmas garland

Tsja, ik mag dan zelf niet zo van kerst houden... héél veel mensen vinden het wel leuk. En nu wil het geval dat ik haken wel weer erg leuk vind, net als het uitproberen van nieuwe haakpatronen. Ik zag zulke leuke patroontjes op de site van Lucy (die kennen we allemaal wel toch? Zo niet, ga eens kijken! Je gaat nooit meer weg, geloof me), daar moest ik mee aan de slag!

Okay, so maybe I am a bit of a Scrooge... I know that many people love this time of year. And well, I do enjoy a bit of crochet and especially trying out new patterns. I saw such cute patterns on Lucy's blog (you know her right? Don't you? Oh visit her, you never want to leave. Promise!). I just had to try them out!

Het haken van die sneeuwvlokken en hulstblaadjes is echt verslavend kan ik je vertellen. Ik had er zo een hele berg bij elkaar.

I can tell you: crocheting the snowflakes and holly leaves was so addictive! Without noticing I crocheted a whole bunch.

Een paar kerststerren erbij en het idee voor een garland was geboren! En nee, deze maakte ik niet voor mezelf. Het is een kerstcadeautje.

It really needed some granny starts and the idea for a Christmas garland was born. And no, I didn't make the garland for myself. It's a Christmas pressie!

Christmas Spirit Give Away

Als ik al die mooie etalages in de stad zie en de mooie kerstdecoraties op jullie blogjes, dan kom ik toch wel een beetje in de kerststemming, hoor. DIY candle tray

Zelf een kaarsenplateau maken is gemakkelijk én helemaal niet duur. Een tijdje geleden kreeg ik een fotodienblad van iemand. Heel goed en lief bedoeld, maar niet helemaal voor mij. Het blad zelf vond ik wel mooi, dus weggooien zou zonde zijn.

A while ago someone got me one of these beverage trays that you can put photographs in. A very sweet gift, but really not 'me'.  The tray however was looking pretty good, so it would've been a shame to toss it in the bin.

Dus besloot ik om er een mooi plateau van te maken waar ik kandelaars en vaasjes op kwijt kan. Voor op de salontafel. Helemaal niet moeilijk.

And so I decided to turn in into a tray to put candlestick holders and vases on, for my coffee table. It was simple, really.

Het werkt als volgt: koop een fotodienblad bij bijvoorbeeld Xenos, Blokker, Marskramer (of tik er één bij de kringloop op de kop). Duur zijn ze in geen geval. Een paar euro. Zoek mooi papier uit, bijvoorbeeld cadeaupapier, scrappapier of mooie pagina's uit een tijdschrift. Maar net wat je stijl is. Ik kocht dit dubbelzijdig scrappapier bij Pipoos. Het zet er een beetje vintage uit.

Leg het stuk papier of de passe partout uit het frame op het mooie papier en teken het op maar af. Knip uit en leg het papier met de goede kant naar binnen in het fotoframe. Leg eventueel een extra stuk papier op de achterkant voor de stevigheid. Leg de achterkant er terug op en sluit het frame (met van die nare, nagelbrekende sluitinkjes).

So, it goes like this. Buy a picture frame tray, for example at the Red Cross, but of course you can thrift it as well! Anyway, it doesn't have to cost much. Find some pretty paper that really appeals to you, like wrapping paper, scrap book paper or some nice magazine pages. I bought this two sided scrapbook paper. It has a vintage look to it that I like a lot!

Put the paper sheet that came with the picture frame tray on the pretty paper and trace it, then cut it to fit the frame. Put the paper in the frame with the good side down. If you like, put the paper that came with the frame on the back to secure the paper. Then put the back on the frame and shut it close with those nasty little locks on there (that always chip my nails, grr).

Waxinelichthoudertjes, kandelaars en vaasjes erop en tadaaa. Sfeer! Ja toch. De liefhebbers kunnen trouwens het blad zelf nog opschuren en schilderen, maar wij hebben veel zwart in huis dus heb ik het lekker zo gelaten. Ben d'r blij mee!

Put your tealight holders, candlestick holders and cute vases in there and tadaaa: instant cuteness. Don't ya think! By the by, if you feel like it you could also sand and paint the tray itsself, but since we have some black in our house I left it like it was.

Blissful Sunday

Net zoals zo velen vierde ik gisteren Sinterklaas. Samen met mijn lief, mijn ouders en mijn zus en zwager. Wij trekken geen lootjes. Wij kopen gewoon voor iedereen een cadeautje en het maakt niet uit wat het is, áls er maar een gedicht bij zit! Mijn oma (van moederskant) is met deze traditie begonnen. "Al is het een rode kool, pak hem maar in en maak er een gedicht bij." Dat vraagt toch om een traditie?

Like many Dutchies I'be celebrated Sinterklaas yesterday (okay, it's Dec 5th, but it was more convenient to celebrate this weekend). Me and my luv celebrated with my parents, my sis and brother in law and had loads of fun. We buy everyone a gift and write (total Sinterklaas- tradition) a funny poem with each gift. It doesn't matter what the gift is, as long as there is a poem with it! My maternal grandmother started this tradition. "I don't care if you want to give me half a cabbage, just wrap it and write a poem for it!" Now, that's just asking for it, right?

In ieder geval... we hebben zo'n 'leut' (jaja Brabants van origine) gehad! Mijn moeder spant altijd de kroon. Die moet altijd zó hard lachen om de gedichten dat ze er bijna in blijft.

Anyhooo, we had such a fun night and had a lot of laughs about the poems. My mum always laughs so hard about the poems that she nearly kills herself (she does that every year!).

En ik ben ook nog eens vreselijk verwend! Dat begon gisterenmiddag al toen de postbode langs kwam en dit leuke cadeautje van Besjes aan me presenteerde. Zo'n schattig beursje, ik ben er zó blij mee. En die knoopjes dan!

I also got really spoilt! It already started yesterday afternoon when the mailman delivered this wonderful parcel from Besjes! Cute coin-purse and buttons!!

Maar de Sint is ook héél goed voor me geweest! Wat dacht je van deze vilten bloemenbroche en die leuke hartjes. Ik bedoel: die schreeuwen om een leuk nieuw winter-project? Een tas, een sjaal, handschoenen?? Ik ben er nog niet over uit.

But Sinterklaas was also really good to me. I mean, this felt brooche and the felt hearts! Don't they just ak for a cosy winter project, like a scarf, bag or maybe gloves?? Haven't decided... yet!

En dan deze meneer de Uil (waarin mijn moeder heeft wild gebreid... daar kun je leuk mee rijmen trouwens, weet ik sinds gisteren!).

And how about Mr. Owl over here? So sweet. And notice that guerilla knitting my mother did in the plant? Quite rebelious for her 59 years!

En Sinterklaas zou Sinterklaas niet zijn zonder... chocolade! Kennissen van mijn ouders gaven een enorm blik met Cadbury's chocolade mee. En als ik een enorm blik zeg, bedoel ik ook een enorm blik.

Sinterklaas wouldn't be Sinterklaas without... chocolat, loads of chocolat. English Acquaintances of my parents gave them this huge tin of Cadbury's chocolates. And when I say a huge tin, I mean... a HUGE tin!

Ik vond Sinterklaas dus weer erg geslaagd en kijk al uit naar volgend jaar! Hebben jullie ook een leuke Sint gehad?
I loved Sinterklaas (well, obviously) and am already awaiting next year! Hope you had a good (Sinterklaas?) weekend yourselves!
