Blanket love

Morgen gaan ze in een doos, met (heel veel) postzegels erop richting Japan... dus nog heel even genieten.

Tomorrow I'll put them in a box and put (lots of) stamps on it and send them all the way to Japan... so let's enjoy these one last time.

Oh, wat heb ik met veel plezier zitten werken aan deze dekentjes!

I've had so much fun working on these baby blankets!

Ze zijn alledrie héél anders geworden: stoer, lief en een allegaartje. En dat was precies de bedoeling. Maar allemaal even vrolijk en heel zacht.

They turned out very different: cool, sweet and 'all over the place'. Exactly like I hoped they would. But they're all happy looking and very soft.

Maar het heeft geen enkele zin om ze te houden! Er zitten kindjes op te wachten, of in ieder geval hun verzorgers. En daar heb ik deze dekentjes toch uiteindelijk voor gemaakt.

But, I really don't have a reason to keep them here. There are little babies waiting for them, or at least their care takers are waiting for them. And really, that was the whole point of making these blankets anyway.

Dus daar gaan ze, op naar Japan! En ik hoop echt dat ze er een goed huisje vinden en dat een klein kindje er heel veel warmte uit haalt. Mijn grote deken blijft nu eenzaam achter, maar wie weet mag ik daar binnenkort weer een maatje voor haken.

So there they go. Off to Japan! I sure hope they'll find a good home there and that a little boy or girl will get lots of warmth from it. My big blanket stays behind, a bit sad. But who knows, maybe I'll crochet it a new friend soon.

Cute clutch

"Ik wil ook leren haken", riep mijn vriendin Marion een jaar geleden. En ze kocht prachtig garen en een leuk haakboek. Spoel nu even een jaar vooruit en raad drie keer bij wie dat leuke haakboek al een jaar in de boekenkast staat. Juist, bij mij dus. Heel lief van haar om dat boek zo belangeloos aan mij te sponsoren (aangezien ze zelf de haaknaald maar 2 keer aanraakte), maar voor wat hoort wat!

'I'd really love to learn how to crochet", my friend Marion called out a year ago and bought gorgious yarn and a great crochet pattern book. Now fast forward and guess who's had the crochet book on her shelf for almost the year? Indeed, that's moi. It's really sweet that she gave me the book (since she only touched the crochet hook twice), but seriously... a gift like that asks for a gift.

Ik vroeg haar wat ze graag wilde hebben en ze riep zonder nadenken: zo'n lieve kleine schoudertas. Kwam dat even goed uit! Ik had nog een stel ontzettend leuke knopen liggen (voor de sluiting en het hengsel)... dus HOP aan de slag!

I asked her what she'd like and without hesitating she said: a cute little clutch. Seriously! I had some cute buttons laying around waiting for a project. So sewing I went.

Lief is de tas wel geworden dacht ik zo. Inclusief gezellige polkadotterds als voering. Ik blij, Marion blij, BLIJ! Soms is één en één drie!

Now, it really turned out cute didn't it! And for the lining I used party-polka-dot fabric. Me happy + Marion happy. Happy! Sometimes one and one is three!

En natuurlijk was ik niet vergeten dat ik een aantal van jullie nog een kaartje zou sturen. Dus laat ik het maar snel doen, voor de winter voorbij is ;-) 

And of course I didn't forgot that I promised some of you a winter greeting card. So, I really have to send them now (before winter ends) ;-)

Blissful Sunday

Ja, het was een heerlijke zondag. Of eigenlijk... een heerlijk weekend. En het stond helemaal in het teken van: koken! Vorige week pakte ik de Allerhande mee en daar stonden een paar gerechten in waar ik spontaan van ging watertanden.

Oh, it was a good Sunday alright. Even better: it was a very good weekend. And it was all about cooking! Last week I grabbed the cooking magazine Allerhande at my local supermarket and it had some dishes in there that just made my mouth water.

Het was nog best een ambitieuze klus, want gisteren besloot ik om noten-gehaktbrood te maken en preikoekjes met yoghurt-peterselie dip. Ja, om te watertanden inderdaad!

I soon figured out that I took on an ambitious task, 'cause last night I prepared meatloaf with pistachios, pinetree nuts and spring onion and grilled leek cookies with a yoghurt-parsily dip. Oh yes, mouth watering indeed.

Mijn versie van de preikoekjes en de dip (en daaronder het plaatje bij het recept). Helemaal niet verkeerd dacht ik zo? Smaakte trouwens ook geweldig! We hadden er nog zo veel over dat ze vanmiddag bij de lunch op tafel stonden. Jum.

My version of the leek cookies and dip (and under the pic, that's the recipe). Not bad at all right. tasted fantastic by the way. We had so many left that we had some for lunch today... oh, the things we have to do...

 

En dan het gehaktbrood. Het ziet er verbazingwekkend hetzelfde uit als het plaatje in de AH hè! Ook dit smaakte erg goed. Volgende keer wat minder noten, want er vielen er wel een hoop uit al etende.

And then the meatloaf. It really looks quite the same as it does in the recipe picture, doesn't it. This also tasted rather good, if I may say so myself. Next time I'm gonna take it easy on the buts though as quite a few fell out whilst eating.

 

Vandaag wilde ik nog een recept maken uit de Allerhande (ik had toevallig alle ingrediënten in huis): citroen-amandelcake. De geur alleen al: lekker! Er zat alleen een behoorlijke 'deuk' in het midden van mijn cake. Mopper! Geen idee hoe dit kan: ideeën? Het had gelukkig helemaal geen effect op de smaak. Nom nom!

And today I figured I had all the ingredients in my cupboards for one more recipe from the magazine. A lemon-almond cake. Oh, the smell alone... YUM. Just one thing: there was a bit of a 'dip' in the middle of my cake! What's up with that? I have no idea how that happens: if you have an idea, please enlighten me. Anyway, it didn't effect the taste of the cake at all (thank heaven): nom nom!

 

En nu? Nu staat er erwtensoep te pruttelen! Eet smakelijk allemaal!

And now? I have some split pea soup ready to be served. Yum. Bon apetit!

Tassen parade (danst u even mee?)

Volgens mij heb ik net als velen van jullie de afgelopen dagen achter mijn naaimachine zitten zwoegen op tassen voor Van Katoen. Niks mis mee hoor, met dat zwoegen. Want ik heb echt plaatjes voorbij zien komen, echt super! En dat allemaal voor een goed doel. Nog beter.

Like many of you I have been sweating behind the sewing machine to make those cute pleated shoppers for Van Katoen. Nothing wrong with making that efford at all! 'Cause I've seen some beauties in blogland, really nice! And it's all for a good cause, even better.

En ook ik maakte er weer een paar! Eerder maakte ik deze leuke exemplaren. Nu een leuke gestreepte, van een oude kussensloop van Ikea.

And I also made a few more! I made these cuties before. Now it was time for another cute stripey one, made from an old pillow cover from Ikea.

(De anemonen kocht ik vandaag, maar ze hangen nu al... wat doe ik daaraan? Geen groene vingers....)

Superleuk toch? Lucky me... uit die kussensloop konden er dus twee!

How cute is this bag! And lucky for me... I could sew two bags out of one pillow case. Yes!

En omdat ik toch al aan het knippen was (en normaal kost dat het meeste tijd, maar met dit patroon dus absoluut niet!), knipte ik ook nog een tas uit deze leuke blauwe stof van Ikea. De Zweedse firma is goed vertegenwoordigd in Gent!

And because I was busy cutting fabric anyway (normally this is the most time consuming part in sewing I think, though not with his pattern!), I also cut a bag from this cute blue fabric from Ikea. I guess the Swedish firm will be represented well in Ghent at Van Katoen.

Ultieme rust (and how Dutch is this)

Je kunt het soms even nodig hebben: rust. Vandaag had ik een teamdag en nee, daarbij dacht ik niet aan rust. Meestal draait een teamdag toch om vlotten bouwen en 'werken aan het wij-gevoel' (of wat dat dan ook zijn mag). Maar vandaag draaide het om rust! We gingen naar de Retraiterie aan de Rottemeren. Wat een schitterende locatie.

Today me and The Team from work had a Team Building Day. And no, normally this wouldn't scream 'relaxation' to me. Mostly a Team Building Day is all about 'survival' and 'working on that 'we are the best' feeling (or whatever the heck that is). But actually today was all about relaxation. We went to a place called Retraiterie at some small lakes called Rottemeren. What a location right? Isn't it gorgious!

Natuurlijk hebben we besproken hoe we als team sterker kunnen worden, maar het draaide eigenlijk meer om je eigen kracht en hoe je je eigen dromen waar kunt maken. Stiekem was ik heel erg toe aan zo'n training, al een tijdje. Ik heb er heel veel aan gehad.

Of course we talked about how we can perform better as a team, but this training was more about your own strength and how to reach your personal goals and dreams. I have to admit that I was secretly looking for a course like this for a long time. It really helped me a lot.

En het landschap hielp ook wel! En met die woeste regenwolken. Schitterend! Natuurlijk een fikse wandeling gemaakt, met daarna snert en lekkere broodjes voor de lunch. Echt een goede dag dus.

And the landscaoe really helped too. I mean, I am all Dutch, but this types of landscapes still mesmerize me. The windmills (there are 4 in that area) and those rain clouds... ah! So we went for a long and firm walk and when we came back there was hot split pea soup and great sandwiches waiting for us. Talk about a good day.

Vintage vondst

Bij mijn nieuwe baan werk ik niet meer om de hoek van een hele leuke kringloopwinkel helaas. Dat was wel een voordeel van mijn oude werk, daar kon ik tussen de middag vaak even heerlijk gaan neuzen. Nu heb ik helemaal geen spijt van de overstap naar een nieuwe baan, maar dit betekent wel dat ik mijn kringloopactiviteiten wat beter moet plannen.

At my new job I don't work around the corner from a fabulous thrift shop, like I did at my old job. At lunch time I would often go there and wander around all the goodies. I really don't regret switching jobs, though this means that I need to plan my thrifting activities a bit better.

Afgelopen vrijdag had ik eindelijk weer eens tijd om een kringloop te bezoeken, een die ik nog niet kende. En meteen bingo! Een vintage dienblad van Douwe Egberts en een ontzettend leuk jaren '70 stofje. Blij!

Last Friday I finally had time to go thrifting again, so I visited a thrift shop that I hadn't visited before. And I found such lovely vintage goodies. A vintage tray by Douwe Egberts (a Dutch coffee brand, which used to make gorgious storage tins and such) and a fun piece of 70s fabric. Happy happy!

I did it again

Nog eentje dan, ah toe... nog eentje. Nou vooruit dan ;-) Voor Kyoyu Kyoyu Share, de organisatie die granny squares verzamelt voor babydekens voor slachtoffers van de tsunami in Japan, maakte ik al eerder twee dekentjes. Met de wol die ik over had en nog wat bollen van de kringloop maakte ik dit nieuwe exemplaar.

One more please, oh common... just one more. Alright then! ;-) I already made two baby blankets for Kyoyu Kyoyu Share, the organisation that collects granny squares for victims of the tsunamu in Japan. With the leftover yarn and two balls of yarn that I got at the thrift store, I made another blanket.

Het randje is een combinatie van halve stokjes, stokjes en de kreeftsteek.

The edging was made of half double crochets, slip stitches and the crab stitch.

Ik vind het zo grappig dat zo'n samenraapsel van wolletjes er zo gezellig uit kan zien. Het is ook lekker stevig, niet geheel onbelangrijk natuurlijk. Ik ben weer erg blij met deze deken!

I think it's so funny that a collection of random yarn scraps can turn out to look so lovely all together. And it's a firm blanket too, not unimportant of course. All in all I am very pleased with the result.

Wat zal mijn volgende haakproject worden? Zal ik weer een dekentje op de pennen zetten (tis toch voor een goed doel)? Of zal ik een nieuwe uitdaging aangaan? Jullie suggesties zijn altijd welkom (meer dan zelfs!), één must: ik moet het wel kunnen gebruiken en/of weggeven.

So, what will be my next challenge? Another blanket (it's for charity after all)? Or do I need a new challenge? Have you guys got suggestions for a new crochet challenge? I'd love to hear them! Juts one thing: I need to be able to use and/or give away my new project...

Patroon: gehaakte winter ster

Winter star crochet pattern!

Misschien niet zo heftig als de afgelopen paar jaar, maar het is toch écht winter in Nederland. Oké, om te schaatsen moet je naar de kunstbaan en voor sneeuw naar Oostenrijk. Maar een bordje snert is nog steeds lekker, net als een glaasje Port na het schaatsen. Winter dus. Ook qua haken ben ik een beetje in winterse sferen.

Winter is very mild this year, not at all like the last two years when we were totally snowed in, in The Netherlands. And even though I have to go ice skating at the indoor ring and we would have to travel all the way to Austria to see some snow, it's winter nevertheless. I still like my glass of Port after ice skating and a hot plate of split pea soup. Yes, winter. Also in crochet I'd like to keep things winter.

En daarom haakte ik een winter ster. En het (super eenvoudige) patroontje deel ik natuurlijk graag met jullie.

And therefor, I am crocheting winter stars. And of course I am sharing this (easy peasy) pattern with you guys.

Haakpatroon: winter ster/ crochet pattern: winter star

Om te beginnen: wat heb je nodig? Een beetje mooi garen natuurlijk (ik gebruikte glanskatoen) en een bijpassende haaknaald. Zorg ervoor dat je een beetje los haakt (dus los en relaxt in de pols, ha!)

What do you need? Pretty yarn of course ( I used mercerized cotton) and a matching crochet hook. Make sure you crochet nice and lose for this pattern (so keep that wrist nice and relaxt, ha!).

Gebruikte steken:

L = losse
HV = halve vaste

V = vaste

St = stokje

Dst = dubbel stokje

What stitches will you be using?
Ch = chain
Single crochet = sc
Slip stitch = sl stch
Double crochet = dc
Treble crochet = trc

Opgewarmd en stretchoefeningen gedaan? Mooi! Aan de haak dan!
Allereerst! Haak 3 losse en maak een cirkel middels een halve vaste.

All warmed up (make sure you stretch first)? Good! Let's hook!

First of all! Chain 3 and make a little circle with a slip stitch!

 

Tour 1/ Round 1

Haak 3 l (telt als 1 st) and haak nog 5 st in de ring. Maak vast met een halve vaste.

Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc) and make 5 dc's in the circle. Join with a sl stch.

Tour 2/ Round 2
Haak3 losse (telt als 1 st) en haak nog een st in dezelfde steek. Haak nu 2 st in elke steek van de vorige ronde tot je rond bent. Maak vast met een hv.

Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc) and crochet a dc in the same stitch. Crochet 2 dc's in every next stitch untill you've finished the round. Finish with a sl stch in the first dc.

Tour 3/ Round  3
Haak 3 losse (telt als 1 st), haak 3 losse en haak een st in dezelfde steek. *Sla de volgende steek over en haak 1 st, 3 l en 1 st in de volgende steek*, herhaal ** tot je rond bent en maak vast met een hv in het eerste stokje.

Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), chain 3 and crochet a dc in the same stitch. *Skip the next stitch and put 1 dc ch 3 and dc in the next stitch*, repeat ** untill you've finished the round. Finish the round with a sl stch in the first dc.

Tour 4/ Round 4
In elk groepje van  '1 st, 3 l en 1 st' van de vorige tour haak je een v, st, ds, st en v. In de ruimtes tussen de groepjes haak je een halve vaste. Als je rond bent, eindig je met een hv in de eerste v.

In every '1dc, 3 ch 1 dc' group of the last round put a sc, dc, trc, dc and sc. In the spaces between the groups you place a sl stch. When you finish the round, join with a sl stch. 

En dan heb je dus een winter ster, gemakkelijk toch? Probeer het gewoon eens en laat me weten wanneer het is gelukt. Ik ben altijd erg nieuwsgierig. En mocht je vragen hebben: schroom niet.

Blissful Sunday

Dit weekend draaide om schaatsen. Want schaatsen, dat vind ik leuk! En gelukkig kreeg ik vorig jaar nieuwe schaatsen van mijn lief én ik woon om de hoek bij een schaatsbaan. Helemaal top. Bijna elke week ga ik wel even.

This weekend was all about ice skating. I love ice skating. And I was such a happy gal when my love gave me new ice skates as a presents. And we live just around the corner from the ice ring. You can find me on the ice almost every weekend nowadays.

Dit was natuurlijk nét na mijn dubbele Lutz ;-)

En na al dat geschaats, plofte ik op de bank en keek televisie (het EK schaatsen om bij het thema te blijven) en haakte nog wat meer granny squares voor nog een dekentje voor Japan.

And after all that ice skating it was time to be a couch potato, watch some tv (I watched the European Championships speedskating as it happens, to keep with the theme) and crocheted some more granny squares for my blanket for Japan.

En ik heb jullie ook nog niet verwend dat ik de afgelopen week enorm ben verwend met mooie stoffen. Een vriendin van me heeft jaren in Japan gewoon en had nog stof liggen. Hoe leuk zijn die donkerblauwe stoffen en die donkerrode met poezen erop. Zo gaaf! Een Secret Santa uit Amerika stuurde het andere stapeltje, dat paars doet een beetje winterig aan (de print lijkt op sneeuwvlokken) en de roze bloemen vragen om een strandtas van de zomer. De vintage stof won ik vorige week bij Ingtings. Woohoo!

And I totally forgot to tell you guys about me being spoilt rotten with fabrics last week! My friend has lived in Japan for a long time and she had some fabrics just sitting around that she wanted me to have. I am completely in love with that navy blue and deep red fabric. Just gorgious! An American Secret Santa sent me the second set. The purple fabric looks a bit wintery (with the snowflake print and all) and the fabric with the pink flowers just screams 'Hawaïi' themed beach bag to me. The vintage fabric I won at Ingthings last week. Woot!

Dat ik meer dan een beetje inspiratie heb om weer achter de naaimachine te kruipen, hoef ik niet te zeggen lijkt me.

Needless to say that I am more than a little inspired to get sewing some nice new stuff!

Free printable - Januari Greeting

Een paar jaar geleden (volgens mijn oh zo secure fotoarchief -ahem- was het 2007) heeft het 's winters precies één dag gesneeuwd. Ik nam vrij (de treinen zouden me toch niet brengen waar ik moest zijn), pakte de camera en liep door de buurt waar ik toen woonde. Ik schoot een aantal leuke winterplaatjes. Deze foto is al jaren mijn winterfavoriet.

A few years back (according to my photo archive it was 2007) it snowed for exactly one day that winter. I took the day off (yeah right, like the train was going to get me to work), grabbed my camera and took pictures of my neighbourhood. This picture has been my winter favorite for years now.

Hoe anders ziet je buurt eruit als het sneeuwt. Een speelplaatsje, waar hemelse rust heerste (volgens mij waren de scholen nog niet uit) en een oh zo Nederlands tafereel: een besneeuwde windmolen. Gewoon, midden in de stad.

I noticed how different my neighbourhood looked all snowy. A little playground, still white and untouched (I think the schools weren't out yet) and a very very Dutch picture: a windmill in the snow. This windmill is standing strong, just like that, in the middle of one of the biggest cities in The Netherlands.

Al die jaren wil ik al 'iets doen' met mijn favoriete winterfoto. Dus maakte ik dit kaartje, want er mogen best wat meer 'echte' kaarten verstuurd worden, vind ik. Papieren post krijgen (en dan niet je bankafschrift) is toch het leukst. Best een goed voornemen voor 2012: stuur elkaar eens een kaartje! Begin gewoon met deze: downloaden, printen op stevig papier, postzegel erop. Sturen maar! Wil je hem liever van mij ontvangen? Meld dat dan even in je berichtje hieronder, dan stuur ik een aantal van jullie een kaartje!

All these years I wanted to do 'something' with my favorite winter piccie. So I made this greeting card, 'cause I think sending real cards is just great. I mean, it's so nice to get 'real' (paper) mail these days (mail that isn't bills that is!). And if you need a New Years resolution that's easy to keep, I think 'sending more postcards' is it! Just start with this one: download it, print it on cardstock, slap a stamp on it and there you go! Would you rather recieve one in the mail from me? Geef 'em van katoen

Gelukkig nieuwjaar allemaal! Hebben jullie een leuke jaarwisseling gehad? Ik heb de avond doorgebracht met mijn gekke, lieve vrienden en vreselijk veel lol gehad. Het was super!

Happy new year everyone! Did you have a lovely new years' eve? I spent the night with my crazy, lovely friends and had a absolute blast. It was a lot of fun!

Normaal gesproken doe ik niet aan goede voornemens. Ik bedoel, als je iets wil doen, moet je het gewoon doen. Daarvoor hoef je niet te wachten tot 1 januari. Maar dit jaar neem ik me toch iets voor. Ik wil namelijk naar Gent. Nou ja, zul je denken, da's toch niet wereldschokkend... Gent is voor Nederlanders toch om de hoek? Klopt! Maar ik ga niet zo maar naar Gent.

Ik ga namelijk naar Van Katoen! Alle opbrengsten van deze dag in april gaan naar een goed doel. Dat alleen al is mooi, maar je kunt tijdens Van Katoen dus ook deelnemen aan allerlei workshops en mooie stofjes en knoopjes kopen. En het is in Gent (leuke stad!). Meer overreding heb ik niet nodig. Ik maak er denk ik gewoon een weekendje van.

En ik heb me meteen maar ingezet voor Van Katoen. Want één van voortrekkers van dit project (de zeer getalenteerde Eloleo) vroeg mede-bloggers om een paar tassen te maken, zodat de winkel van Van Katoen geen plastic tassen hoeft te gebruiken. Ze had zelfs het patroon al uitgetekend. Da's dus een inkopper!

Normally I'm not the person to make new years resolutions. If you want to do something, then just go for it! Don't wait untill Januari first! But this year I have one. I want to go to Ghent. Ghent, Belgium. And why is that so interesting I hear you think (since Ghent is just around the corner for us Dutchies). But I am going to Ghent for a reason. 

I am going there to visit Van Katoen. All benefits of this sewing event go to charity. There's workshops to take, fabrics and buttons to buy... seriously, no one needs to twist my arm to go. And Ghent is one of my favorite cities in Belgium, so I think I am gonna make a weekend out of it.

And I thought I might as well contribute. One of the biggest promoters for this event (the wonderfully talented Eloleo) asked bloggers to make some fabric shopping bags, so when people buy something at Van Katoen they don't have to use plastic bags. She even drew us the pattern. Easy peasy.

Helemaal handig: als je het patroon knipt volgens de aanwijzingen (met de stof dubbel gevouwen), knip je meteen twee tassen. Even productie draaien en voila. Ik vind ze zo tof! Het zou zo maar kunnen dat er nog meer onder mijn naaimachine vandaan komen.

Even easier: if you cut the fabric like Eloleo tells you to (with the fabric folded in half), you cut two bags in one go. Talk about working on the assembly line! It was so easy and I think they're great. Maybe some more will come out from under my sewing machine. Who knows!

Hebben jullie nog goede voornemens? En reizen jullie misschien ook in je eentje naar Gent af voor Van Katoen? In een kop koffie drinken heb ik altijd wel zin.
