Easy Easter baking: focaccia

Bij bakken voor Pasen denk je meestal aan zoetigheden. Nu ben ik ontzettend van de zoetigheid: suikerbrood, krentenbollen, muffins, cake, scones met jam. Ik vind het allemaal vreselijk lekker. Maar mijn lief is er absoluut niet van. Die maak je blijer met wat hartigs. Dus maakte ik vanmiddag focaccia.

When you're baking for Easter, you often think about baking something sweet. I absolutely love that: sugar loafs, raisin bread, muffins, cakes, scones and jam. You can wake me up for them. But now my love, he likes hearty stuff much much better. That's why I made focaccia this afternoon.

Het bakken van brood, of wat broodachtigs, vind ik altijd nogal eng. Dat komt denk ik vooral door gist, omdat dat een levend ding is en nogal wispelturig. Maar voor dit recept durfde ik het aan, keek eens voorzichtig van een afstandje of de gist braaf zijn werk bleef doen en kon uiteindelijk met een hele brede grijns deze focaccia uit de oven halen. Achteraf denk ik: nou fluitje van een cent. Dus ik ga dit zeker vaker maken! Dit zeer eenvoudige focaccia recept vond ik hier. Bon appetit!

Baking bread, or anything bread related, scares me a little I have to say. I think it's because of the yeast, 'cause yeast is a living thing and it can make or break the entire recipe. But for this recipe I just took my chance, watched the yeast do its thing and was able to open the oven with a very big grin. Looking back I would say it was easy peasy. We love paper (and a question)

Het sneeuwde toen we de cover van Robin Magazine fotografeerde, in januari. In heel Nederland stonden files van meer dan 20 kilometer. Kris en Marjolein mailden me 's ochtend ongerust. Of ik het wel zou redden? Of ik de auto wel in durfde te stappen? Want ik zou fotograferen. Ik keek naar buiten, zag de vlokken vallen en dacht: no pain, no glory. Dus ik stapte in de auto en reed (nog verbazend snel, zonder files) richting Putten. Daar fotografeerden we de cover, bij Quip&Co. Een ontzettend leuke winkel met industriële meubelen, die we naar hartelust mochten gebruiken.

It was snowing when we had the photoshoot for the new cover of Robin Magazine, bacj in January. Traffic in The Netherlands was horrible that day. Huge traffic jams and delays of hours and hours. Kris and Marjolein e-mailed me in the morning, worried. Would I make it? Wasn't I afraid to get into the car? 'Cause I would take the pics that day. I looked outside and saw huge snowflakes. But I decided: no pain, no glory. So I got into the car and drove east (rather quickly actually, hardly any taffic jams). We were taking pics at a shop called Quip&Co. This shop sells fabulous industrial design furniture and we were allowed to use everything in the shop. It was fantastic.

En nu is het bijna Pasen. Als ik buiten kom, is het nog steeds ijzig koud. In delen van Nederland sneeuwt het wederom. Er lijkt niets te zijn veranderd sinds die dinsdag in januari dat we de covershoot hadden. Maar oh, wat is er weer veel gebeurd. We maakten deze foto en waren op slag verliefd. De kleuren, leuke spulletjes en de sfeer. Het klopte helemaal. Lekker retro, maar wel vrolijk. En stoer ook wel (wie ons kent weet dat wij geen tutjes zijn)! We kwamen erachter dat we deze kleuren zo leuk vonden, dat we ze in het hele magazine terug laten komen. En dat maakt dat Robin Magazine 2 (We love paper), ondanks het koude weer, zonnig is. De lente laat niet lang meer op zich wachten. Ik weet het zeker.

And now it's almost Easter. When I step outside, it's still freezing. In parts of The Netherlands it's still snowing. It seems like nothin really changed since we had the ice cold photoshoot back in Jauary. But so much happened since then. We took this picture and were immediately in love. The colours, cute items and the whole atmosphere. Everything fell into place. It's retro and happy looking, but it also has a rough edge (those wh know us, know that we're not ladies with an extreme 'sweet' taste). We found out that we loved the colours so much that they can be found in the entire magazine. And that's why Robin Magazine 2 (We love paper) has that warm, sunny feeling. Spring won't be long now, I'm sure.

Only one more week

Het tweede nummer van Robin Magazine heeft als thema: We love paper. Wij houden van papier. Tsja, als je een magazine maakt, dan moet je wel houden van papier. Toch? We hebben allerlei leuke verhalen geschreven over dingen die met papier te maken hebben: brieven schrijven, journals bijhouden, Round Robin, penvriendinnen en natuurlijk allerlei leuke DIYs met papier. Maar we zijn ook creatieve geesten die graag haken en koken niet vergeten.

The second issue of Robin Magazine has the theme 'We love Paper'. I think that goes without saying when you make a magazine. Right! We have great features about all things paper, like pen pals, snail mail, Round Robin projects and keeping a journal. And of course, all kinds of DIY's when it comes to paper. But of course we also didn't forget our loyal readers that love to crochet and cook.

Pattern drawing

Zoals jullie weten blog ik in het Nederlands en het Engels. In mijn hoofd lopen die twee talen ook altijd flink door elkaar. Vandaag moest ik zo lachen. Want tijdens het uittekenen van een nieuw naaipatroon schreef ik zowel in het Nederlands als Engels op het patroon. Gelukkig snap ik het straks zelf nog.

As you guys know I write my blog in both Dutch and English. In my mind these two languages are always colliding. I don't even notice it anymore. But today I really had to laugh. 'Cause while I was drawing up a new sewing pattern I caught myself writing down terms both in English ánd Dutch on my pattern. Luckily I'm the one who has to get it later.

Shameless

Schaamteloos. Dat was ik vandaag wel. Want toen ik mijzelf door kou en sneeuw een uur op de fiets had afgebeuld, vond ik dat ik bij het plaatselijke wolwinkeltje mijzelf mocht trakteren. Want: ik had toch dat hele stuk in dat rotweer op de fiets gezeten. Want: er werken daar zulke lieve mensen. Want: ik verdiende het best. Want: ik mocht best wat uitkiezen als ik het zou kunnen gebruiken in mijn granny square deken. En ik bedoel: de kleurtjes passen er perfect bij, toch? Ik bedoel maar.

Shameless, that's me today. 'Cause after I was cycling for an hour in the cold and the snow, I treated myself to some new yarn at the local yarn shop. Because: I cycled all that bloody way anyway. Because: there are some really nice people working at the yarn shop. Because: I'm worth it. Because: I could actually pick something, as long as I would use it for my granny blanket. And I mean, the colours are a great match. Or so I think.

Maar het was nog niet voorbij met de schaamteloosheid. Want op de terugweg, wederom door kou en sneeuw, stapte ik even af bij het plaatselijke bloemenstalletje. Daar zijn er in Utrecht een berg van: gewoon zo, hop, naast de weg. Ze zijn altijd open, geweldig vind ik dat. Dus kocht ik er roze (ja, vlaag van verstandsverbijstering) ranonkels en tulpen. Want: de mensen in de stalletjes zijn bijna allemaal heel erg aardig, zelfs als ze de hele dag in de kou en sneeuw staan. Want: bloemen brengen vrolijkheid en een beetje lente in huis. Want: ik had het verdiend (??). Want: misschien werken de bloemen aanstekelijk op het weer en wordt het ook daadwerkelijk lente.

But I wasn't done with being shameless. On my way back, again cycling through cold and snow, I stopped at the local flower stall. Here in Utrecht there are several of these stalls scattered allover town and I absolutely love them, they're always open, or so they seem to be. I really liked it. So I bought myself tea roses and tulips. Pink ones, yes... temporarily insanity. Because: the people at the flower stalls are always so nice, even if they've been working in the cold and snow all day. Because: flowers bring happiness into my house. Because: I'm worth it (??). Because: maybe the weather will start acting like the flowers, spring please!

Maar dan ben ik eigenlijk nog niet klaar met mijn schaamteloosheid, want ik heb ook gewoon een schaamteloos verzoek. Jullie kennen mijn reiswebsite inmiddels al wel hè? I AMsterdam

Wat is het stil hier hè, deze week. Geen tassen, geen gehaakte dekens. Ik weet het! Ik zat namelijk gisteren de hele dag in Amsterdam. Ja, zo kom je er nooit en zo kom je er elke week. Dat is trouwens helemaal geen straf.

It's a bit quiet here, I know. No bags, no crochet blankets. I know! I was in Amsterdam yesterday. Yes, sometimes I don't go there for years and now it's the 2nd time this month. Not that I mind it at all.

Ik ben namelijk weer in de schoolbanken gekropen. Dat is wel even gek, na 10 jaar. Maar het is me goed bevallen. En de lokatie is ook niet gek. Vlakbij het Museumplein in Amsterdam.

Reason I was back in Amsterdam: I am back at school! It's a bit crazy after 10 years, but ut all went very well. And I love the location too: in the centre of Amsterdam near all the museums and the central concert building.

Om de hoek van het Rijksmuseum zit de organisatie waar ik de komende weken in de schoolbanken zit. Maar goed dat de Hogeschool voor Journalistiek in Tilburg op zo'n ontzettend oninspirerende plek zat, want anders had ik mijn diploma nooit gehaald! (Met die sneeuw mag het van mij trouwens wel afgelopen zijn, mensen wat een kou!)

Around the corner from the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum (where Rembrandts Night Watch resides) is the organisation where I will be schooled the next couple of weeks. I could do worse right? It's a good thing that the college I went to when I was stilla student was in a much less interesting place, as I probably would never be able to concentrate on studying! Oh, and I am so over snow and cold. Brr.

Blissful Sunday

Oh, wat een tegenvaller was dat zeg! Zo'n kou na de afgelopen week met zalig lenteweer. Ik hoopte dat het door zou zetten en mijn lief en ik dit weekend lekker konden gaan wandelen, bij Baarn bijvoorbeeld of Lage Vuursche. Maar er kwam niets van: regen, sneeuw en veel kou.

Oh, what a bummer! After last week brought sunshine, warmth and the hope for spring I was so hoping this weekend would be wonderful as well. I was hoping me and the husbear could go for a hike in the woods nearby. But none of that. Instead of spring we got rain, snow and a lot of cold.

Maar gelukkig was er genoeg wielrennen op televisie en moest ik nog wat werken, dus ik hield mezelf wel bezig. En tijdens het kijken van het wielrennen (die mannen reden ook door de kou zeg, in Italië!) is het lekker haken. Het mooiste van een deken haken... is dat je er zelf onder ligt tijdens het maken. Daar word je vanzelf warm van!

But lucky for me a lot of cycling was broadcast on tv this weekend and I had some work left to do. And whilst watching the cycling (those poor boys were suffering in the cold Italian hills!) there's a lot of crocheting one can do. The good thing about crocheting a blanket is... that you're underneath in whilst making it. Nice and warm I tell you. Utter bliss.

Deze granny deken begon ik begin februari. Met deze deken (hopelijk een erg enorm exemplaar) hoop ik een deel van mijn voorraad op te haken. Tot nu toe gaat dat prima en het wordt een erg vrolijk geheel. Ook de losse eindjes heb ik voor een groot deel weggewerkt. Maar klaar? Nog lang niet! Hoeft ook niet, ik mag er het hele jaar over doen.

I started this granny square blanket in Februari. Hopefully this (probably massive) blanket will help me bust my yarn stash, or a large part of it. Until now, it't going pretty well. And it looks sooo nice! I am also weaving in ends here and there. But finished? Not by a long shot. But that's ok, I am 'allowed' to work on this all year.

En een cake bakken is natuurlijk ook de moeite niet, maar die moeite neem ik dus nauwelijks als het lekker weer is en ik alleen maar naar buiten wil. Maar op zo'n grauwe, koude zondag? Perfect!

Baking a cake is not a lot of trouble of course. But I hardly bake when the weather is nice and I just want to go outside and play. But on a grey and cold day like today? Purrrfect.

Dreaming of spring #3

Veel heb ik niet geërfd van mijn grootouders. Waar mijn zus er met de juwelen van mijn oma vandoor ging (klinkt heel gemeen, maar mijn oma had ze haar gewoon toebedeeld), heb ik alleen wat kleinigheidjes. Het hobbelpaard dat mijn opa voor me kocht toen ik een jaar was, de breikoker van mijn oma en deze twee kruikjes.

I didn't inherit much from my grandparents. My sis got some jewellery from my gran (it isn't as mean as it sounds, my nan just wanted my sis to have them), but I just have some small pieces. Like the rocking horse my grandfather bought me when I was a year old, or the knitting case of my nan and these two jars.

Het zijn een beetje mysterie-kruikjes, want ik weet niet zo goed waar ze nou van of voor waren. Ik weet ook niet eens meer waar ze stonden bij mijn oma in huis. Op de één staat Sneek en op de ander Fúgje. Oké, Friesland dus. Maar, mijn grootouders zijn geboren en getogen in Brabant. Dus waarom Friesland? Ik denk eigenlijk dat het met de fietsenwinkel van mijn opa te maken had. Hij verkocht, neem ik aan, ook Batavus fietsen en die fabriek staat in Friesland. Dit zullen relatiegeschenken zijn geweest voor mijn opa als hij wellicht eens afreisde richting noorden voor zaken? Voorlopig blijft dit dus een raadsel, ook best leuk qua erfenis.

~Half en half verwacht ik nu een e-mail van mijn moeder die roept dat mijn vermoedens complete kolder zijn en dat deze kruikjes gewoon deel uitmaakte van een spaaractie van Albert Heijn in 1970... zou jammer zijn...~

These jars are a bit of a mystery, 'cause I have no idea what they were for. I can't even remember where my nan had put them in her house. On one of them there's the name of Sneek and on the other Fúgje, villages in Frysia. But my grandparents were from the south of Holland and lived there all their married lives, so I don't get this Frysia thing. However, it could have something to do with my grandfather having a bike shop. I think he had Batavus bikes in his shop and the Batavus factory is in Frysia. So these jars must be gifts from the factory whenever he ordered bikes with them. Or something? I guess it'll remain a myestery, that's also a nice inheritance. 

~Part of me is now awaiting my mom to e-mail me and tell me this blog is complete bullshit and they just bought hese jars at the local supermarket or something... oh, that would be too bad wouldn't it?~

Dreaming of spring #2

Wat fijn, er zijn weer ranonkels. In deze woeste bos bloemen zaten eerst ook tulpen, maar die hebben inmiddels het loodje gelegd. Geeft niets, want deze wilde ranonkels vind ik geweldig.

Oh, this is lovely. The ranunculus are back in seasons. This bush of flowers also had a bunch of tulips in them, but they've passed on. But that's okay. I like these wild flowers just as they are.

Daarvan krijg ik weer helemaal zin in de lente en in wat lente-achtigs haken. Maar alleen groen- en geeltinten is misschien een beetje saai? Ik heb er wel genoeg, zo ondervond ik al spittend door de voorraad... oeps.

They make me long for spring! And I also want to crochet something spring-y. But just greens and yellows, isn't that a bit boring? I dunno. I do have enough of them, or so I found out whilst digging to my stash, ooooops...

Wat heeft dit nog nodig? Rood en roze? Blauw? Wit? Wat zou eens leuk zijn als nieuws lente-project? Nieuwe lente, nieuwe kansen!

Dreaming of spring #1

Een afspraak op maandagochtend is natuurlijk nooit je van het, zo vlak na het weekend. Niet even rustig op gang komen, maar meteen er tegenaan. Vanochtend reisde ik af naar Monnickendam voor een afspraak. En ja, als je dan in zo'n schitterend slaapdorpje in de zon loopt, dan is er eigenlijk geen betere start van je week te bedenken.

Appointments on an early Monday morning are never fun, now are they? No taking it slow after the weekend, but go go go right from the start. This morning I had to go to Monnickendam (15 km north of Amsterdam) for a meeting. And I have to say, walking through this gorgious little village that was still sound asleep, in the sunshine, it was the best start to my week.

 

Echt, als het zo kan, ga je toch nooit meer op een kantoor zitten werken? En ja, natuurlijk moest ik weer een poes op de foto zetten. Maar hij lag er ook zo gezellig bij! Helemaal zijn eigen schuld dus (of haar schuld, heb niet gekeken...). Maar geef toe, wat een schitterend dorpje zo in de zon hè. Volgens mij wordt het 's zomers helemaal platgelopen met toeristen, dus het was wel leuk om het zo leeg en rustig te zien.

Really, if you can work like this? Why would I ever bother again with an office job? And yes, of course I had to take a picture of a sweet kitty. But it was laying there and was being all sweet and all. I couldn't help it. But seriously, what a pretty village, isn't it? In summer this place is definately bursting with tourists, so I think I was actually really lucky to see it so quiet and sleepy.

Blissful Sunday...

...and Give Away winners!

De brug stond open, de hond at het op, mijn wekker deed het niet... nee, smoesjes! Ik weet dat ik eigenlijk de Give Away winnaars bekend zou maken. Maar ik had geen zin. Tsja, dat heb je soms. Ik zat namelijk een zalige, heerlijke zaterdag in Amsterdam met mijn lief. Dus dan schieten dingen, zoals Give Away winnaars bekend maken, er weleens bij in.

The bridge was open, the dog ate it, my alarm didn't work... oh, excuses, excuses! I know I was supposed to announce the Give Away winners yesterday. But the thing is. I didn't feel like it! Yep, that's right. I was spending my lovely Saturday in Amsterdam with me love. So announcing Give Away winners was very far from my mind.

Ik ging even langs Laura Dolls, de meest geweldige vintage winkel van Amsterdam! Granny square dekens, vintage bedden- en linnengoed, cocktailjurken en schitterende jasjes. Je kijkt er je ogen uit. Helaas vinden wel meer mensen die een geweldige winkel, want erg goedkoop is hij niet (meer).

I was shopping at Laura Dolls, the most fantastic vintage shop of Amsterdam! Granny square blankets, bed linen, cocktail dresses and fabulous coats. It's just too much. Unfortunately, lots of people like this shop. 'Cause it isn't exactly cheap (anymore).

En we sloten de dag natuurlijk af met een glaasje op een leuke stek. De stek krijgt meestal onze ultieme goedkeuring als er ook een kat rondwandelt en dat was hier zo. Zo'n zoete poes. Een beetje op een barkruk luieren, pootjes wassen en haarscherp in de gaten houden wie er misschien een lekker hapje heeft. Geef mij zo'n leven.

And of course we ended the day with a glass of something nice and a great place. We like the place even better when there's a cat. And there was a pretty cat here, such a sweetie. Laying around on a bar stool, washing the paws and eyeing up people who may have a treat. What a life, I'l have one of those thank you!

I love vintage coffee pots

Inmiddels heb ik er aardig wat verzameld: vintage koffiepotten. Geweldig vind ik ze! Met vrolijke kleurtjes, bloemen, noem maar op. Wat saai zijn dan die moderne dingen van Philips ofzo. Nee, dan die oude koffiepotten, met guitige tuiten, die nog echt op het fornuis moesten. Daar gaat het bij mij dan weer een beetje mis, want ik heb een inductiekookplaat. Maar geloof me, als vaas of bloempot werken die vintage koffiepotten ook prima.

I've collected quite a few of them: vintage coffee pots. I love them! Happy colours, flowers, the lot! How boring are all those current days coffeemakes, by Philips or the like. No, the old ones that you'd have to pout on the stove to brew coffee. Unfortunately I cook on induction, so no brewing coffee with my vintage coffee pots. But really, they make great vases and plant jars as well.

Vorig jaar kocht ik tijdens Van Katoen dit schitterende stofje, want die vintage koffiepotten kon ik niet weerstaan. De combinatie van felblauw, rood, bruin en beige vind ik ook zo heerlijk retro. Niet te versmaden dus. Tot nu toe lag het stofje te wachten op een bestemming, maar ik wist niet zo goed wat ik ermee moest doen. Maar nadat ik vorige week een Catherinholm tas maakte, leek het me leuk om met deze stof ook een retro tas te maken met twee grote zakken.

Last year I bought this great retroi fabric in Ghent, I mean. How could I resist those retro coffee pots!  I love the combo of bright blue, red, brown and beige: so retro. I had to take it home with me. But the fabric was waiting for a project. So when I made this Catherinholm inspired bag last week, it seemed like such a fun idea to make a bag like that with this retro fabric.

Wat een schatje hè! De zakken zijn afgewerkt met een oranje-rood biaisbandje en heeft extra lange hengsels. Het is een canvas tas, dus ook nog eens lekker stevig. Ik ben er helemaal gek op!

Isn't it adorable? The pockets have a orange-red trim and the straps are a bit longer than usual. This is a canvas bag, so it's nice and strong. I completely love it.
