Creative guide to colorful Porto

Mijn zomervakantie begon dit jaar in Porto. Een stad waar ik al zo veel over gehoord had en van sommige van jullie zelfs al mailtjes had gekregen (waarvoor dank, trouwens). Als ik op blogs keek, of in de reisgidsen neusde, kwam ik eigenlijk niet zo veel te weten over de stad. Ja, er is Port en de gebouwen zitten er vol met tegeltjes. En iedereen riep hoe gezellig het was. Tijd voor een ontdekkingstocht.

My summer holiday started this year at the beginning of September with flying into Porto. I had heard lots about this cities and was so curious. When I read other blogs or flipped through my guidebook, I couldn't really grasp what Porto was all about. Yes there is Port and the buildings are full with tiles called azulejos. And everyone kept saying how they loved the atmosphere. So, I had to find out for myself.



Wat moet je zien in Porto

Gut, waar te beginnen? Begin in de Rua das Flores, zou ik zeggen. Een lange straat vol prachtige panden, gezellige winkels en restaurants... en een wolwinkel. Hier wandelen toeristen en locals vrolijk naast elkaar, kun je streetart spotten en zo af en toe eens op een terrasje neerploffen. Vlakbij vind je het imposante Palacio da Bolsa en aan de andere kant het waanzinnig mooie station Sao Bente. In de vertrekhal zie je de mooiste tableaus azulejos, niet te versmaden.

What to see in Porto?

Jeez, where to start? I guess a walk through Rua das Flowers would be a good start to your Porto citybreak. This street is full with pretty betiled buildings, cosy shops (yes, a yarn shop too), fun restaurants and lots of locals. On one side of the street you'll bounce into the grand Palacio da Bolsa and walking up you'll soon reach the amazing Sao Bente station, which is famous for the azulejo tableaus in the main hall. 

Vanaf de Torre de Clérigos heb je een schitterend uitzicht over de stad, dus een must om deze toren te beklimmen. Tegenover de kerk kun je een wat modern winkelcentrum inschieten, om uit te komen bij een waanzinnig mooie boekwinkel: Lello. In weelderige Art Nouveau stijl. Klein nadeel: je moet €3 betalen om binnen te komen, maar als je een boekje koopt, krijg je dit bedrag terug.

From the Torre de Clérigos you have a fabulous view over the city, so it's a good idea to climb up. Across from the church you'll walk through a modern, though small, shopping centre to reach the gorgeous Art Nouveau façade of Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores I've ever set eyes on. Small disadvantage: you have to pay €3 to get in and take pics, but you get the amount back if you buy a book. 

Waar moet je Port drinken, in Porto?

Dat klinkt een beetje als 'waar koop je rozen in een bloemenwinkel' hè. Maar goed! Port, heel belangrijk als je dan toch in Porto bent. Je wandelt de prachtige Luis I brug over en je bevindt je spontaan in Port-Walhalla, ook wel Vila Nova de Gaia geheten. Aan deze kant van de Douro hebben veel Port makers hun opslag. Je kunt bij veel Port makers terecht voor een rondleiding en een Port proeverij. Duur is het niet, meestal ben je €5 kwijt voor een proeverij én rondleiding. Wij houden van prijsvergelijkend warenonderzoeken (hehe) en liepen heel wat makers af. Ik raad ik ieder geval aan om langs Taylors te gaan, vanwege de prachtige ligging en de 10 jaar oude Tawny en Ferreira vanwege de Portugese roots.

Where to drink Port, in Porto?

Wow, that sounded a little like 'where to buy roses in a flowershop', but hey. Port, very important when you're in Porto. You walk across the impressive Luis I bridge and find yourself in Port-Heaven, aka Vila Nova de Gaia where lots of port makers have their storages and offices. And best of all: you can visit most of them for a tour and a tasting. Not expensive either, at €5 per person for a tour and Port tasting. Now, husband and me were quite thorough when we went Port tasting (ahem) but I highly recommend going to Taylors for the excellent 10 year old Tawny and the views, and to Ferreira because of the Portugese roots.

Waar moet je (wol) winkelen in Porto?

Laat ik maar gewoon met de wol beginnen toch? In de Rua das Flores kun je terecht bij Retrosaria, dat betekent 'fournituren' in het Portugees en je vindt er niet zo veel wol, maar wel weer leuke stoffen, lintjes, bandjes, knopen etc. Een frisse winkel ook! De mooiste wolwinkel in Porto is Ovelha Negra, met een aardige eigenaresse, prachtige Portugese wol en een mooie buitenlandse selectie. Een echte authentieke wolshop is Tricot Brancal waar je je wol per kilo kan kopen, er is keuze te over maar de eigenaren spreken alleen Portugees, dus hup: aan de handen en voeten!

Where to shop (for yarn) in Porto?

Let me just start with the important bit: shopping for yarn. In Rua das Flores there's Retrosaria, which means haberdashery in Portugese. So not only yarn, but lots of fabrics, ribbons and buttons as well. My favorite yarnshop was Ovelha Negra with a lovely owner who stocks fabulous Portugese yarns and pretty foreign yarns as well. If you'd like to stroll into something more authentic go to Tricot Brancal where you have loads of choice and you buy your yarn per kilo. The owners only speak Portugese, so poining and smiling is in order (well, it was for me).

Wat mij betreft kun je alle souvenirstalletjes links laten liggen en meteen naar A Vida Portugesa wandelen (in dezelfde straat als Lello), want daar heb je (op de eerste verdieping) een enorme collectie leuke hebbedingetjes en lekkernijen. Van Portugese ontwerpers, super origineel, superleuk. Lekkere limonades, mooie sieraden, zeep, papierwaren en ook wol! Niet goedkoop, maar handgesponnen en handgeverfd, dus ach.

Run past all the souvenir stalls, straight to A Vida Portugesa in the same street as Lello. On the first floor of this shop you'll find amazing stuff, all from Portugese designers. Soaps, lemonades, olive oils, paper goods, jewellery, and yarn! Not cheap, but well worth it since it's hand spun and hand dyed. 

Waar eten in Porto?

Ga in ieder geval een keertje koffie drinken met Café Majestic, echt een plaatje van een café in Art Nouveau decor. Bovendien: de french toast is er geweldig. Even verderop kun je in de Bolhao markt geweldige streekproducten kopen en kun je voor een prikkie een glaasje wijn kopen. 's Avonds kun je terecht bij het hippe Cantina 32 (wel reserveren) of tapas eten bij Clérigos (waar ze een wijn vending machine hebben, whaa!).

Where to eat in Porto?

Have breakfast or coffee at least once at Café Majestic, such a pretty café in Art Nouveau decor. The french toast is to die for btw. Closeby you'll find the old fashioned Bolhao market where you can shop for local goodies and order a glass of cheap (but tasty!) local wine. In the evening I highly recommend eating at hip Cantina 32 (make reservations!) or have tapas at Clérigos (where they have a wine vending machine, whoah!).

Waar logeren in Porto?

Dat is gemakkelijk! Huur een appartementje, bijvoorbeeld via AirBnB of Booking.com. Je kunt voor €60-€70 per nacht een ruim appartement huren, da's toch comfortabeler dan een hotelkamer. Wij logeerden in Casa do Patio, super centraal gelegen tegenover het Palacia da Bolsa. Toplocatie en wat een appartement! Flinke slaapkamer, leuke woonkamer, complete keuken met vaatwasser en al. Heerlijk. Maar er zijn genoeg appartementen te vinden in Porto, dus je vindt vast wel wat leuks.

Where to sleep in Porto?

Well, that's easy. Rent an apartment, through AirBnB or Booking.com you'll find so many options! For €60-€70 per night you'll have spacious apartments allover town. Try to find that much space in a hotel! We stayed in Casa do Patio, across from the Palacio da Bolsa, a great location. It had a big bedroom with a good bed, two balconies, a large livingroom and a complete and modern kitchen. But there's plenty of choice in Porto.
